Dear list members,

this is a really short notice but *tomorrow *will be the first *research
seminar in slavic linguistics* this semester. The idea of the seminar is
to give the employees, guests and students of our institute a platform
for informal exchange of current research ideas and findings. It will
take place each Thursday in room 306 at 12:30.

Tomorrow's topic is *THE CONTROVERSIAL RISE OF FEMININE PERSONAL NOUNS
IN UKRAINIAN SINCE 2014* by *Dr. Vasyl Starko* from Ukrainian Catholic
University (Lviv). Everyone, who is interested in the topic, is welcome
to join us either personally or per Zoom.

*When:* Thursday, 14.11.2024, 12:30
*Where:* Ernst-Abbe-Platz 8, Raum 306, and via Zoom
*Zoom:* https://uni-jena-de.zoom-x.de/j/65674611770 *Passcode:* 146662
*Annotation:* The talk considers one of the most remarkable recent
developments in the Ukrainian language: the increase in the frequency
and diversity of feminine personal nouns. Corpus data is used to show
when and how this change occurred. The discussion addresses the probable
causes, contributing factors, and problematic aspects concerning the
formation and use of these nouns. Several specific cases are examined in
the light of survey and corpus data. The controversy triggered by this
phenomenon in the Ukrainian linguistic circles and society at large is
analyzed.
*Bio:* Dr. Vasyl Starko is an Associate Professor at the Department of
Philology, Ukrainian Catholic University. His scholarly interests
include corpus and cognitive linguistics, semantics, morphology, and
Ukrainian and bilingual lexicography. He taught the courses "Ukrainian
in Modern Ukrainian Society: Linguistic, Historical, and Sociological
Aspects" (2021) and "Language and War in Ukraine" (2024) at Jena University.

Best regards
Ivan Levin
